How to Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable in Honor Of Earth Day 2022

These easy-to-follow tips make a big difference.
April 20, 2022

Sustainable, eco-conscious beauty routines have become one of the biggest beauty trends — and as it conserves precious resources and combats climate change we’re all for it. People are on the hunt for skin care products to tackle their skin care concerns and makeup items to bring their makeup looks to life, but they’re also seeking out ways to make their daily regimen more eco-friendly.

If you’ve been meaning to make some changes to your own routine, there’s no better time than the present with Earth Day right around the corner. Below, find nine tips to help make your beauty routine more sustainable in honor of Earth Day 2022.

Why Is Sustainable Beauty Important?

One of the keys to making sustainable choices is understanding why these choices matter in the first place. Sustainable beauty is important because it helps to conserve essential resources. From the plastic and hard materials used in beauty product packaging, to the water used to create your favorite products, the truth is that beauty depends highly on available resources.

However, there are certain practices that you can adopt in order to help slow down the depletion of natural resources — and most of these practices are incredibly simple.

How to Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable

Below, we’re sharing eight ways to create a more sustainable beauty routine.

1. Recycle Jars and Containers

By now, you hopefully know that recycling is important. The container holding your face serums, facial cleansers, and moisturizers don’t have to go to waste. Check their packaging to ensure they can be recycled, and then make sure you recycle them so they can be repurposed.

You can also upcycle certain products by getting a little crafty. Consider using an old jar or bottle as a DIY makeup brush holder.

2. Use Reusable Cotton Pads

Reusable beauty pads made from cotton or terry cloth are a great eco-friendly option for removing your makeup. Saturate one with the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof - All Skin Types, glide it over your face, and watch your makeup disappear. After using it, you can simply throw the reusable pad in the wash and it will be as good as new.

3. Cut Back On Waste

Simplify your beauty routine and cut back on waste by using multi-tasking products, like the L’Oréal Paris Pure-Sugar Resurface & Energize Kona Coffee Scrub. This face scrub can be used to exfoliate your face and your lips, so no need to buy separate products for each.

4. Don’t Leave the Water Running

You may not realize it, but the water you use can take a real toll on the planet. When washing your face, or during any other parts of your routine where water is required, don’t leave the water running.

We recommend splashing your face with water and applying your cleanser with damp fingers before turning off the faucet. Massage the cleanser over your face, then turn the water back on to rinse off. It may seem easier to just leave the water running, but this little bit of time can make a big impact.

5. Repurpose Mascara Wands

Rather than tossing all parts of your used up mascara in the trash, take out the wand and clean it off. Clean mascara wands make great eyebrow and eyelash combs.

You can also opt for eco-friendly formulas, like the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Noir Balm Washable Mascara which is vegan and free from mineral oils.

6. Bring Reusable Shopping Bags

Reusable shopping bags are nothing new, however, you may be accustomed to only bringing them with you when you're shopping for groceries. But bringing them along when you’re shopping for beauty products can make a difference, too.

7. Stock Up On Eco-Friendly Beauty Tools

Your beauty tools can be sustainable, too. Makeup blenders, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender, are a more eco-friendly alternative to using disposable applicators. Rather than tossing them into the trash after a use or two, you can wash them and continue using them for months.

8. Seek Out Products With Minimal Packaging

Packaging can play a big role in the amount of waste caused by your beauty routine. To make your routine more sustainable, consider reaching for products that have minimal or no packaging, like bar soap and shampoo bars

You can also seek out products made from already recycled materials, called post consumer recycled materials. For example, the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Anti-Aging Midnight Serum is housed in a custom glass bottle made out of recycled and recyclable materials.
