Step #1: Pick Your Hair Dye
Dying your hair at home is no easy feat. The most important step of this process is the first one: picking the hair dye you’re going to use. Finding a hair dye can be tricky, especially because you want to use one that won’t leave your hair looking dull, flat, or damaged. You also want to decide if you want to use a semi-permanent, hair color bleach, hair highlight, ombré hair color, or permanent hair color. If you’re unsure of what type and color is best for your needs, take our hair color quiz.
If you settle on using a permanent hair dye, let us suggest the L’Oréal Paris Féria. The at-home hair dye gives intensified, brilliant results. The product also provides a twist on traditional hair colors, taking inspiration from fashion. With bold colors ranging from bright red to platinum blonde, you have a wide range of custom-blended colors to choose from. The dye comes with a power shimmer conditioner to help seal in the color and smooth out your locks. The line also includes the L’Oréal Paris Féria Multi-Faceted Highlights if you would prefer highlights over allover color.
Editor’s note: If you have very long or thick hair, buy two boxes to ensure you don’t run out of product mid-dye. Don’t worry if you don’t end up using both boxes—instead, put the extra box away for a later date to use for root touch up and refreshing your color.
Step #2: Apply the Color
Follow the directions inside the box of detailed instructions on how to properly apply the dye. Put on the hair dying gloves provided prior to applying and then mix the dye as directed. Once you’ve applied the color to your hair, set a timer and wait for the color to develop.
Step #3: Rinse and Condition
After the amount of time instructed has passed, hop into the shower and rinse your hair until the water runs clear. Don’t use any shampoo during this first wash to avoid stripping some of the color away. (Wait a few hours, then you're free to wash your hair as per usual if your locks need a refresh.) Apply the given conditioner to help keep you from getting damaged hair.
Step #4: Show Off Your New Shade
Now that your hair is dyed, it’s time to show off your new color to the world! The next time you’re feeling adventurous, you're now armed with the ability to swap your hair color for the most current hair color trend in just a few simple steps.
Step #5: Maintain Your Color
Of course, you’ll want to make sure you’re keeping up with a proper hair care routine to keep your newly colored locks looking fresh and vibrant. Here are a few of our best hair care products for color-treated hair.
