October 31, 2022

Beauty maximalists can rejoice in the current Y2K trends like frosted eyeshadow, hair tinsel and bedazzled makeup looks that are having a major moment on social media. There’s a new one to add to the list — bedazzled hair — and this nostalgic trend spotlights rhinestone-adorned tresses for the ultimate more-is-more hairstyle.

Whether you’re eager to deck out your strands in shimmering rhinestones or you’re still unsure, bedazzled hair comes just in time to be the perfect addition to your holiday glamour and New Year’s makeup look. Below, check out everything you need to know about bedazzling your hair at home, (no fancy tools required) and some bedazzled hair inspo for the festive season.

How to Bedazzle Your Hair With Rhinestones

Contrary to the end results, bedazzling your hair at home is pretty simple and you don’t need a special tool to get the look. All you need is lash glue, rhinestones and tweezers to help you place them. Check out how to bedazzle your hair in three easy steps.

1. Start With Dry Hair

This may seem obvious but in order for the glue and rhinestones to stick to your hair, it needs to be dry. That being said, it’s going to be difficult to salvage your style after removing the hair gems so it may be worthwhile to coordinate your bedazzled hair with your wash schedule and rock the look when you have day four or five-day hair.

This is also a good time to decide on the hairstyle you want to wear with your bedazzled hair. If you’re going for a bedazzled low bun, create the updo now. If you’re going for bedazzled beach waves with a middle part, brush your hair to remove any tangles and apply heat protectant like the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Frizz Killer Serum Leave-In before curling your hair.

Your hairstyle should be finished when it’s time to apply the rhinestones.

2. Use Lash Glue to Apply the Rhinestones

Lash glue with a brush applicator is a great way to adhere rhinestones to your hair and skin. If you don’t have lash glue with a brush applicator, use a clean small eyeshadow or liner brush to apply the glue to your hair. If you have dark hair, black lash glue may work but overall, clear lash glue is the best (and less messy) choice and will work with all hair colors.

Once you decide where you want to place the rhinestones, add the smallest dot of lash glue to your hair. Lash glue works best when it’s tacky so give the glue around 30 seconds to dry, then, take your rhinestone and apply it to your hair.

We recommend grabbing tweezers because depending on what size rhinestones you use, it may be a bit difficult to grab them with your fingers. Repeat this process until your hair is bedazzled to your liking.

3. Spritz with Hair Spray

Once your hair is completely bedazzled, give the rhinestones another layer of protection and mist your hair with a few spritzes of the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold, Light Hairspray Unscented to set your style.

How to Remove Rhinestones From the Hair

Start by removing the rhinestones from your hair, as best you can, without pulling. Use your fingers to lightly lift the rhinestones or use your tweezers to separate the hair from the stick backing. You can save the rhinestone for future hair bedazzling so this step is definitely worth it. Once all the rhinestones are removed, it’s time to wash your hair.

Washing your hair is the best way to remove all of the lash glue because leaving it can lead to tangled, sticky hair that may be a painful mess to fix. We recommend a clarifying shampoo like the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Micellar Shampoo to remove all traces of leftover lash glue from your hair. This shampoo contains hyaluronic acid and castor oil to nourish and hydrate strands while removing all signs of excess product buildup and oils.

Since this shampoo is an intense wash, finish up your wash with the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Moisture Seal Conditioner, a hydrating conditioner enriched with hyaluronic acid to smooth and replump dry strands. Finish off your routine with a moisturizing leave-in like the L’Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Curls Non-Stop Dreamy Curls Leave-in Conditioner.

3 Bedazzled Hairstyles to Try Right Now

Now that you know how to bedazzle your hair properly, finding some inspiration is the next step to nailing your look. Check out our favorite ways to sport the bedazzled hair trend.

1. Bedazzled Baby Hairs

After using hair gel like the L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Mega Gel to lay your edges, spotlight your impressive work with bedazzled baby hairs. Since the hair is already smoothed into place, applying the rhinestones is the quick and easy part. All we can say is get ready to collect compliments with this hairstyle.

2. Bedazzled Wavy Hair With a Middle Part

This style is centered around the simple embellishments that play up your hair’s natural texture. Start with the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Tinted Dry Shampoo for Blonde Hair or the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Tinted Dry Shampoo for Brown Hair to add some volume at the roots. Then, dot the glue and place the rhinestones all-over your strands from the roots to the ends.

Editor’s tip: To make a bold statement, choose rhinestones that are going to contrast with your hair color. We love the look of iridescent rhinestones on darker hair colors.

3. Bedazzled Slick Updo

A slick bun or ponytail is a mega-versatile style that can be worn on a number of different occasions. To get the look with a glam twist, add evenly spaced rhinestones all-over the top of your head. Pair it with a bold red lip and voluminous lashes to create the most gorgeous holiday look.
