There’s something to be said about a ponytail hairstyle. Whether a classic version or something a bit more outside-of-the-box, ponytails can be worn for just about any occasion—not to mention they’re one of the first styles most of us learn to create. While you may be a pro at smoothing your strands into a traditional pony that's perfect for hitting the gym, we’re here to talk about a ponytail that’s a bit more intricate: the bubble ponytail. This trendsetting hairstyle will have your long locks looking straight out of a fairytale. Even better, it only takes a few minutes to create. Read on for a step-by-step tutorial on how to create the perfect bubble ponytail.
What Is a Bubble Ponytail?
Real quick—let’s talk about what a bubble ponytail is. This hairstyle involves pulling your hair into a traditional ponytail. Then, using hair elastics tied down the length of the ponytail to create smaller, round sections that look like bubbles (we’ll dive more into how to get the look below). Basically, it’s a seriously gorgeous yet easy-to-create hairstyle—one of our favorites, might we add. Here’s how to create one.
Step #1. Prep Your Strands
Before we get into styling, it’s important to prep your strands with the proper hair-care routine. For your bubble ponytail, it’s a good idea to give your mane an extra boost with a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Wash your hair with the L’Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Shampoo and L’Oréal Paris EverPure Volume Conditioner to do just that.
Step #2. Smooth Your Locks
Next, you’ll want to follow one more preparation protocol: ridding your hair of frizz, flyaways, and baby hairs. First, apply a hair serum, like the L’Oréal Paris EverSleek Frizz Finish Oil-In-Serum, throughout your mane to tame frizz. Then spritz a bit of hairspray onto a clean toothbrush and brush any baby hairs and flyaways back for a smooth, sleek finish.
Step #3. Gather Your Ponytail
You should already be familiar with this step. Gather your strands into a mid or high ponytail, ensuring there are no bumps, knots, or tangles. Then, secure with an elastic.
Step #4. Create Your Bubbles
It’s time for the moment you’ve been waiting for: your bubbles. One to two inches down the length of your ponytail, depending on how long your hair is, place another hair elastic. Gently tug at the sides of this newly created section to add volume and form a rounded, bubble-like shape. If needed, you can use the end of a rattail comb to carefully create your bubble. Repeat this process down the length of your ponytail.
Step #5. Tug And Perfect
After all of your bubbles are created, you’ll want to ensure your style is neat and even. Gently tug at the sides of any bubbles that need perfecting, making an effort to maintain approximately the same bubble size going down the length of your ponytail.
Editor’s tip: If you accidentally pulled too much hair when volumizing your bubbles, don’t stress. Instead of starting over, use a bobby pin or two to tuck the protruding strand back into the bubble. Nothing to see here!
Step #6. Seal In Your Style
Now that your bubble ponytail looks pretty sweet, we’re sure you’ll want this style to stay looking just as amazing throughout the day (or night). To keep everything in place, mist the L’Oréal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray Extra Strong Hold Volume over your mane.
3 Ways To Take Your Bubble Ponytail Up A Notch
If you want to add something extra to your bubble ponytail hairstyle, here are three easy options for upgrading your pony.
#1. Pop On A Headband
Headbands are one of our favorite hair accessories at the moment, and while adding a headband to your hairstyle may take less than 30 seconds, it’s sure to make an impact.
#2. Add Some Sparkle
Wearing a bubble ponytail for prom or your wedding calls for extra glitz. Pop small, bedazzled hair pins throughout your bubble ponytail to leave a little sparkle wherever you go.
#3. Play With Color
If you want to add a bit of spunk to your ‘do, a temporary hair color spray (or two) will do the trick. Color each of your bubbles in one or more shades from the L’Oréal Paris Colorista Hair Makeup Temporary 1-Day Hair Color Spray collection, or try coloring only every other bubble. Get creative with it!
