3 Ways to Rock Blue Eyeshadow This Year

A statement look doesn't need to be difficult to achieve.
February 02, 2022

When it comes to changing up your makeup, it can be difficult to experiment with looks that fall outside your comfort zone. And for many people, blue eyeshadow is a far cry from their go-to eye makeup looks. While all eyeshadow techniques can be used regardless of the color you’re working with, there are some tips and tricks to be aware of when working with a bold hue.

So below, we’re breaking down how to get three different looks using blue eyeshadow: a toned-down look if you find blue intimidating, a moderate look if you’re fairly comfortable with color, and a bold look if you’re not afraid to play with some vivid hues.

1. Inner Corner Pop

If the idea of creating a bold look with bright colors is intimidating to you, opting for a neutral look with a pop of color in the inner corners is a great place to begin. Also keep in mind that not all shades of blue are super bold. You can opt for a baby blue or another muted blue in order to keep the look fairly understated.

Get the Look

Step 1. After priming your eyelids with eyeshadow primer or concealer, apply a skin tone eyeshadow shade to your lids. Then blend a slightly darker, neutral color into the crease of your eyelids with a fluffy brush to create natural definition.

Step 2. Next, using a pencil brush, apply a matte or shimmery blue eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eyes. For this look, it’s best to use a light or bright blue shade, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Argentic, to illuminate the eyes rather than make them appear closed off by choosing a dark blue.

Step 3. Finish off the look by applying a volumizing mascara like the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara

2. Faded Metallic

Metallic eyeshadow looks are trending, and they look gorgeous when done in shades of blue. If you’re not afraid of rocking a pop of color, but you prefer simple makeup techniques, this is the look for you.

Get the Look

Step 1. Begin by priming your eyelids and applying a neutral eyeshadow to your lids and into your crease.

Step 2. Dip a flat eyeshadow brush into a metallic eyeshadow, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Timeless Blue Spark, and apply it starting near your inner corners and working your way towards the center of your eyelids. Blend the color at the center of your eyelids to create a soft, diffused look. Then, blend the metallic shadow at your lower lash line stopping at the center of your eyes to match the top lid. Only applying the color at the inner half of the eyes creates a unique, faded appearance.

Step 3. You can add extra definition to the eyes by applying winged eyeliner, or skip this step and finish off with a coat of your favorite mascara.

3. Two-Tone

If bold looks don’t scare you, then get creative by pairing different shades of blue together in a two-tone eyeshadow look. It’s simple to create, yet it can be really striking. For this look, you’ll want to get your hands on an eyeshadow palette with at least a few shades of blue, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Pocket Palette Eye Shadow

Get the Look

Step 1. Starting with a light or medium blue shade, apply it to your eyelids and blend it into the crease with a fluffy brush.

Step 2. Using a pencil brush, take a deeper shade and blend it at your upper and lower lash line 一 this will provide definition and smokiness to the look.

Step 3. Next, find a waterproof eyeliner pencil, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner, in a hue that matches the darker blue eyeshadow, and line your lower waterline.

Step 4. Cap off the look by applying your go-to mascara to your top and bottom lashes.
