3 Editors Put the Infallible Grip Precision Felt Liner to the Test — Here’s Why They’re Obsessed

When it comes to paring down your makeup look, eyeliner can easily feel like the one product you can cut out without losing any sleep. On the flip side, eyeliner can quickly turn up the dial on any beauty look with very little effort. So we gave the product to three of our editors — all with different eye shapes and eye makeup preferences — to see how this long-wearing formula held up in varying conditions. The test: A hot day of brunch, shopping and errands.

I don’t wear winged eyeliner often but one that promises 30 hour, transfer-proof wear definitely captures my attention. I have hooded eyes and oily eyelids so winged eyeliner is harder to achieve with my eye shape and my oily lids make it nearly impossible for it to last more than a couple of hours without smudges and fading. 

As I said, I don’t wear eyeliner often so I expected the application process to take a few tries (and some cotton swabs and micellar water) but I achieved both wings on the first try. I wore the Grip Precision Felt Waterproof Eyeliner in gray and the shade was dark enough to highlight my lash line while proving to be such a nice upgrade from my go-to black eyeliner.

I had a pretty chill Saturday with brunch, some shopping and errands but it was pretty hot and humid so I was especially curious to see how the liner would last through all of that in addition to my difficult oily lids. Much to my surprise, the wing did not budge. This test was a nice reminder that I should wear eyeliner more often and when I do, this felt-tip eyeliner will be my go-to.

The test: A girl’s night out.

My usual eyeliner look involves tightlining my lower lid waterline with black pencil because it brings my round shaped eyes up and out. If I’m being honest, I’m also not the most skilled at drawing a winged line so for everyday makeup I just stay away. But if you give me a colored liquid liner, I take that as a challenge to go bold.

I used the Grip Precision Felt Waterproof Eyeliner in green for a girl’s night out that included bar and restaurant hopping. It wasn’t as difficult to create my line, even with my overly curly lashes trying to get in the way through the entire process. The liner glides so smoothly that the color is pretty rich with even a light hand. I started with short dashes first, then went back to connect them and created one long line with a small flick at the outer corner. It’s such a different look for me so I kept it simple. 

I did find that by the end of the night my line wasn’t as pronounced as it was when I started the day, but I think it was due to the fact that I didn’t set my makeup and I kept the line relatively thin from the start. I was happy to see that even though my face was pretty dewy in the 90-degree weather (read: I was sweaty all night), the line stayed intact and didn’t smudge or run.  

This liner could convert and convince the non-believer that using liquid eyeliner can be easy and worth the extra few minutes in their makeup routine. I especially love that the available shades ease the colored eyeliner novices into alternatives to black eyeliner.

The Test: Work and after-work events.

Winged liner is my signature makeup look — so whenever I get the change to test out a new pencil or liquid formula, I’m stoked. This liquid liner promises 30-hour wear, a precise application and a waterproof, smudge-proof finish. I soon learned that on a 97-degree day filled with work tasks and events, this was exactly what I needed. 

I opted for my go-to classic black and swiped it on in the morning during my usual makeup routine and was pleased to see that the formula was just as pigmented as the package claims. Not to mention, the felt-tip applicator makes it so quick to draw on a flick at the corner of each eye, that I was done in less than sixty seconds. I wore the liner throughout my day of virtual meetings (where it clearly showed on camera), and in and out of hot and cold temperatures between the outdoors and blasting air conditioners. It didn’t budge. 

Next, I headed downtown for a work event and despite sweating through my commute, my liner still did not move. Not until I removed it with cleansing balm that night did it slip off, and for that, I know I’ll rely on this formula for busy work days to come.
