Just like that, another prom season is upon us. And if you’ll be doing your own makeup for the big night, then you’re probably trying to gather makeup inspiration and decide which type of look to wear.
If you ask us, you can never go wrong with a rosy soft glam makeup look. Rose tones are flattering on a wide variety of complexions, and they’re neutral enough to complement tons of different dress colors.
So if you’re going the rosy route, keep reading because we’re sharing a simple tutorial with product recommendations to help you master your prom makeup look.
1. Prep Your Skin
Great base makeup can go a long way, but nothing will replace proper skin prep. Cleanse and exfoliate your skin to buff away dry patches, and follow up with a moisturizer.
To ensure your makeup looks great in photos, it’s best to avoid products with SPF for this occasion as SPF in skin care and makeup can cause flashback. We recommend applying the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum and then follow it up with the L’Oréal Paris Collagen Filler Moisture Filler Facial Day Cream Fragrance Free. It’s rich enough to keep your skin hydrated all night, but lightweight enough not to contribute to excess oil.
2. Apply a Longwear Foundation
Start your makeup look by applying a foundation that will last through the night, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Up to 24H Fresh Wear Foundation in a Powder. It provides full-coverage without looking or feeling heavy on the skin. It’s also resistant to heat, sweat and water, meaning that it will hold up well through dinner, high energy dancing and selfies galore.
Blend it onto the skin using the sponge it comes with, or use a dense foundation brush to buff it in and add coverage where needed.
3. Add Color to Your Cheeks
Because your eye makeup will be rosy, be sure to choose a blush in the same color family. We love the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush with Camellia Oil in Rosewood. It has a fine pearlescence in it, which helps give the skin an understated glow.
Apply it to the apples of your cheeks using a fluffy blush brush and swipe up towards your temples to create a lifted effect.
Editor’s tip: You might be tempted to add highlighter to your skin for additional glow, but too much luminosity doesn’t translate well on camera. We recommend either skipping it all together or applying just a small amount of the L’Oréal Paris True Match Lumi Glow Nude Highlighter Palette to the tops of your cheekbones.
4. Prep Your Eyelids
Once your base is complete, it’s time for the eye makeup. Start by applying an eyeshadow primer to your lids. Then subtly define the crease of your eyes with a neutral or rose eyeshadow that’s two to three shades deeper than your skin tone. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend the edges and give it a diffused finish.
5. Add Rosy Shimmer to Your Lids
Using the doe foot applicator, apply the L’Oréal Paris Brilliant Eyes Shimmer Liquid Eye Shadow Makeup in Rose Gem to the center of your eyelids. It’s a gorgeous, mid-tone rosy shade that flatters all eye colors and does a great job at reflecting light.
Once you’ve applied it to the center of the eyelids, use a small fluffy brush to lightly diffuse the edges.
6. Create Your Winged Eyeliner
To add definition to your eyes that will stand out in photos, create winged eyeliner using the L’Oréal Paris Infallible The Super Slim Liquid Eyeliner.
If you prefer a softer look, you can create winged eyeliner using eyeshadow, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Noir Cest Noir. Using an angled eyeliner brush, trace your lash line and wing it out at the outer corners of your eyes.
7. Apply a Volumizing Mascara
Finish off your eyes by adding even more definition with a volumizing mascara. The L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara is great because it provides tons of volume and doesn’t weigh down the lashes.
8. Line Your Lips
To give your lips definition and color that will pop in photos, trace their outline with a lip liner, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lip Liner. Go for a neutral hue that’s two shades deeper than your natural lip color.
9. Add Color to Your Pout
Give your lips color while keeping them hydrated with the L’Oréal Paris Glow Paradise Balm-in-Lipstick with Pomegranate Extract in Rose Mirage — a shade that will pair perfectly with your eyeshadow. The formula contains pomegranate extract to keep the lips nourished and melts on contact, leaving behind a beautiful color and a shiny finish.
Editor’s tip:If you prefer a bolder lip or want to contrast your lips with your eye makeup, you can also rock a red lipstick with this look instead. The L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Reds Of Worth Satin Lipstick With Saturated Color in Ambitious Red is a great option because it’s a rich hue with a smooth formula.
10. Set the Look
Finish off your prom makeup by locking it in place with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray and Set Make-Up Oil-Free Setting Spray. It helps to prolong the wear of your makeup and ensure it doesn’t settle into lines.
Hold the bottle six to eight inches from your face and spray it in “X” and “T” motions to get even coverage.
