How to Rock the Green Eye Makeup Trend

August 16, 2019

During summer, you probably spotted a variety of nature-inspired eye makeup looks, from flower eyeliner to statement sunset eyes. Now, as summer turns to fall, green eyeshadow and eye makeup, in general, is what you can expect to see everywhere. The emerald green eye makeup trend has already begun to take over runways, social media feeds, and inspiration boards, and we think it’s pretty clear what color needs to be on your lids in the months to come. Richly pigmented green eyeshadow draws inspiration from nature and brings the lushness of greenery front and center—on your face. So, if you want to embrace the prettiest (and most popular) hue of the moment, grab a green eyeshadow palette and read on to discover some of our favorite ways to rock green eye makeup.

GREEN EYE MAKEUP IDEA #1: EMERALD UNDER-EYE

One of our favorite beauty trends to emerge this year happens to be upside down under-eye makeup. It’s characterized by the boldest part of your statement eye being on your lower lid. Put two trends together by creating this eye makeup style with green eyeshadow. Cover your upper lids with a neutral shadow, followed by a swipe of the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Golden Emerald or the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Green Promenade along your lower lash line. After applying, blend out for a more ethereal finish. Top it off with a coat of the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara.

Editor’s note: Afraid this look is too bold? Try placing an emerald eyeliner in your waterline for a pop of color that’s slightly subtler. Use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Forest Green to get the look.

GREEN EYE MAKEUP IDEA #2: EMERALD SMOKY EYE

Smoky eyes will forever hold a place in our hearts (and our makeup routines). For that reason, we love the look of an emerald-tinted smoky eye for a fresh take on this standard style. To create this green eye makeup look, use an eye primer or concealer to prep your lids. Next, you’ll use the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Dual Effects in Emerald Conquest to bring your smoky eye to life. The trick to creating a perfectly blended eye is to start with the lightest shadow in the green eyeshadow palette, then layer the darker colors on to build depth. Top it off with another dusting of the lightest shadow along your brow bone and inner corner to bring a bit of brightness to an otherwise dark look.

GREEN EYE MAKEUP IDEA #3: GREEN AND GOLD

Silver and gold? Don’t know her! If you’re looking for a color power duo, consider pairing green and gold for a gorgeous green eyeshadow look. Start by painting your lid in gold with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Crushed Foil Metallic Eye Shadow in Gilded Gold. Then, reach for an emerald green eyeshadow and drag it along your lower lash line. Finish the look with a few coats of the L’Oréal Paris Unlimited Lash Lifting and Lengthening Washable Mascara.

GREEN EYE MAKEUP IDEA #4: GREEN AND PURPLE

Speaking of colors that complement each other, green and purple are another color duo worth wearing on your lids. Since both of these shades tend to be vibrant, we recommend keeping it simple by using them as a pop of color. First, color your lids in a matte nude eye shadow shade, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Paris Beach. Then, drag the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Perpetual Purple along your lower lash line. Ready to add your green? Apply a green eyeshadow to your inner corner to finish off your green eyeshadow look—sometimes less is more! As always, you’ll want to finish your eye makeup with a few coats of mascara.

GREEN EYE MAKEUP IDEA #5: GRAPHIC EMERALD EYELINER

While we love the look of green eyeshadow, you may find that eyeliner is more your speed when it comes to trying a green eye makeup look. Take a look around and you’ll notice one thing is true: Emerald is the new black. When it comes to lining your eyes in a super-trendy way, take a break from your beloved black eyeliner and reach for the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Eyeliner in Wild Green instead.

Green Eyeliner Look #1: The dotted cat eye. To create this look, use your green eyeliner to draw a traditional cat eye along your upper lash line. From there, use the eyeliner’s pointed tip to draw evenly spaced dots along your lower lash line. If you want your green eye makeup look to have a more retro vibe, you can make your dots a bit larger.

Green Eyeliner Look #2: The double-sided cat eye. Two is better than one in some cases—and when it comes to this calligraphy-inspired cat eye, that mantra definitely rings true. This green eye makeup look is all about extending to opposite ends of the eye for a look that’s fit for an Egyptian queen. To create it, start by drawing a classic cat eye with your green eyeliner. Next, move on to your lower lash line. Draw a super-fine line from the outer edge of your nose towards the inner corner of your eye, extending halfway along your lower lid.

Editor’s note: Since this particular green eye makeup look takes a little practice to perfect, be sure to have a cotton swab and a bottle of the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof - All Skin Types nearby to touch up any mistakes.

Now that you’re a master at using green eye makeup, try your hand at sporting another color from the rainbow. Check out our article, Shade Spotlight: Orange Eye Shadow, for four orange eyeshadow looks to try.
