It’s no secret that exfoliation is one of the key components to a great skin care routine. In addition to buffing away dead skin cells to reveal a brighter complexion, proper exfoliation can help to address uneven skin texture, clogged pores and more.
However, exfoliation can be harsh on the skin, especially when skin is exposed to stressors like excess sun. Come summertime, there’s a whole host of reasons why switching from a facial scrub to a liquid exfoliator is beneficial. But those benefits extend into the fall and winter too, making liquid exfoliator a must year-round.
We talked to Dr. Erin Gilbert, board-certified dermatologist and L’Oréal Paris consultant, about the topic and ahead we’re sharing why liquid chemical exfoliants should be one of your go-to summer skin care items that takes you into the end of the season and through the fall.

1. Liquid Exfoliator May Be Gentler Than Physical Exfoliator
During the summer, your skin is likely being exposed to more sunlight than usual, making it prone to sensitivity. Because of this, it’s a good idea to stay away from harsh physical scrubs because according to the American Academy of Dermatology, scrubbing the skin can cause more irritation.
Instead, opt for a chemical exfoliator, like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 5% Glycolic Acid Peeling Toner. This gentle peeling toner is formulated with glycolic acid to buff away dead skin cells as well as aloe vera to soothe the skin. The concentration of exfoliating acids in this formula makes it gentle enough for everyday use, but beware that not all liquid exfoliators are the same.
Gilbert explains that while anyone can use a liquid exfoliant, it’s important to start out slowly. “You want to start using liquid acid once a week to evaluate your sensitivity (look for redness right after use or irritation),” she says. “You can then amp up the frequency, depending on the strength and indications on the product packaging.”
2. It Helps Your Other Skin Care Products Work More Effectively
Because exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the surface layer of the skin, it helps the products you apply afterwards better penetrate the skin and therefore work more effectively. So, if your skin care goals include diminishing dark spots with niacinamide-infused products, or increasing hydration with a hyaluronic acid serum, like the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Derm Intensives 1.5% Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum, using a liquid exfoliator first can be incredibly helpful.
After applying your liquid exfoliator and additional skin care products, it’s important to follow up with sunscreen. “Remember to always wear sunscreen when using any kind of acid or peel, since your new skin cells must be protected from UV damage,” explains Gilbert.
We love the L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Day Lotion SPF 30 because it protects the skin from UV rays while moisturizing and addressing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
3. It’s Mess-Free
Unlike scrubs that need to be used with water and a sink, you can use a liquid exfoliator on-the-go or when you’re in a hurry. According to Gilbert, “Liquids can be swept over the skin and usually self-neutralize versus needing to be washed off with water.”
Either saturate a cotton pad with the formula and swipe it on your face, or simply apply a few drops into the palms of your hands and pat it into your skin.
4. It’s Refreshing
If you’re like us, the last thing you want during any time of the year is heavy, greasy skin care sitting on your face. Liquid exfoliating products are exactly what you would expect — fluid and incredibly lightweight in texture. They absorb into the skin quickly and typically don’t leave behind any residue.
Plus, you can store your liquid exfoliator in the refrigerator and it will feel like a cooling skin treatment when applied onto your skin.
