WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID?
Hyaluronic Acid is the fundamental substance in which our cells bathe. It is one of the body’s most important naturally occurring substances. This sugar, produced by our own cells and naturally found in the epidermis and dermis is a key component for skin hydration and plump.
Hyaluronic Acid constitutes skin’s “biological water bank” since it is a natural jellified molecule able to retain more than 1000 molecules of water, acting as a biological sponge.
Skin content in Hyaluronic Acid represents 50% of the total body content in Hyaluronic Acid. Almost all cell types can produce it, unfortunately, its synthesis slows down with time and its amount in skin decreases leading to dehydration and loss of plump. That’s why dermatologists recommend including Hyaluronic Acid in the skincare routine to re-plump skin and reduce first signs of aging.
Did you know?
Hyaluronic acid is constantly produced. It takes only 1 day for a Hyaluronic Acid molecule to be produced and degraded naturally in skin.
WHAT DOES HYALURONIC ACID DO FOR SKIN
On a daily basis, Hyaluronic Acid is constantly produced by cells and degraded by enzymes (called: hyaluronidases) that’s the natural life cycle of Hyaluronic Acid. From 25, the amount of Hyaluronic Acid starts to decrease due to an imbalance between its production that slows down with age and its degradation which accelerates. When Hyaluronic Acid is faster degraded than produced, skin loses its natural capacity to keep the water in. Skin lacks suppleness and dehydration lines appear. This is the first sign of premature aging.
Alongside this, UV exposure and pollution leads to oxidative stress, a bomb for existing Hyaluronic Acid. But that’s not all: other external factors from our lifestyle as nutrition, tabaco, stress, sleep deprivation can also be responsible for oxidative stress and accelerate Hyaluronic Acid loss.
Did you know?
In addition to its role of biological moisturizer in the epidermis, Hyaluronic Acid also contributes to sustain collagen production in the dermis. Both molecules are responsible of skin plumpness and suppleness. In the long term, when Hyaluronic Acid rate decreases in skin, collagen too.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HYALURONIC ACID?
Recently, it has been integrated in Elseve Hyaluron Plump range for its wrapping and caring properties on the hair fiber to maintain a good hair quality and to boost suppleness and shininess.
L’Oréal Paris uses a biodegradable, biocompatible and biomimetic Hyaluronic Acid for the skin. It is formulated via a biotechnological processes using a lactic bacteria fermentation process. Naturally inspired, highly tolerable, its high standard quality makes it suitable for all skin types and tones. L’Oréal Paris’ cosmetic products indicate presence of Hyaluronic Acid on their list of ingredients as Hyaluronic Acid, or Sodium Hyaluronate, or sodium Acetyl Hyaluronate.
WHICH HYALURONIC ACID SHOULD I LOOK FOR?
It is really important to use different types of Hyaluronic Acid to have a complete action: on skin surface to fight against skin dehydration and deeper in skin to slow down wrinkles’ appearance.
L’Oréal Paris uses 3 different types of hyaluronic acid in its superior formulas: two pure Hyaluronic Acid types and one acetylated:
- HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT HYALURONIC ACID: the one that immediately replenish skin with moisture. Macro Hyaluronic Acid, (high molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid superior to 1000kDa) that has a high affinity with skin surface for immediate hydration and smoothing of fine lines coming from dehydration.
- MICRO MOLECULAR WEIGHT HYALURONIC ACID: the one that penetrates deeper to hydrate in depth. Micro Hyaluronic Acid (low molecular weight until 50 kDa) penetrates the epidermis and moisturizes skin in-depth. It helps to reduce skin roughness and boosts/stimulates skin’s natural production of Hyaluronic Acid.
- MICRO-EPIDERMIC HYALURONIC ACID: the one that replumps and protects collagen, another key plumping molecule. Micro-epidermic Hyaluronic Acid (very low molecular weight (25kDa)) has been proven to penetrate and deliver a complete anti-wrinkle by slowing down both Hyaluronic Acid and collagen degradation.
L’Oréal Paris is an expert in the formulation of Hyaluronic Acid in skincare. With several formulas adapted to specific targets, we have tested it in 7 clinical studies with a panel of 200 patients.
Did you know?
L’Oréal Paris Hyaluronic Acids are obtained from biotechnology. The process consists in using biofermentation of lactic bacteria feaded with cereal grown in the same geographical area. The acetylation of our micro epidermic Hyaluronic Acid is made from green science. Our Hyaluronic Acid are produced in France and in Switzerland.
WHAT IS MICRO EPIDERMIC HYALURONIC ACID?
Micro epidermic acid is a smart Hyaluronic Acid. This micro Hyaluronic Acid is tagged with a signature that cells put on molecules they produce by their own to protect them from degradation. By marking HA with this tag, the strategy is to enhance the life span of the molecule in the skin thus making it efficient for a longer period. The micro epidermic Hyaluronic Acid that L’Oréal Paris has been tested and the study showed it was 13x long lasting in the skin.
Did you know?
It has been shown that micro Hyaluronic Acid used in filler injections boosts collagen synthesis, also responsible for plumpness and firmness of the skin.
FROM WHEN AND HOW SHOULD WE START TO USE HYALURONIC ACID?
It’s never too late or too early to start using a skincare with Hyaluronic Acid. Everyone needs moisture, it’s a universal need. There is no limit to how often you can use Hyaluronic Acid on skin. All our Hyaluronic Acid are biocompatible and bioavailable for all skin type even sensitive ones. We recommend using it both morning and evening, before any other skincare. You can layer multiple products with Hyaluronic Acid in your routine such as serums, day and night creams. By increasing moisture, it will help other ingredients to better penetrate.
WHAT IS A GOOD ANTI-AGEING SKINCARE ROUTINE?
Skincare can deliver anti-ageing effects in a variety of ways. It all depends on your desired outcomes, which may include hydration, plumping, softening fine lines and wrinkles and brightening dark spots. Different active ingredients can be incorporated into your skincare routine to address these concerns and can be combined together or used in different product formulations. For all-around anti-ageing ability, we recommend combining two powerhouse actives: hyaluronic acid and retinol.
To provide you with some focus areas and recommendations for your anti-ageing skincare routine, L’Oréal Paris offers the AI Skin Diagnosis tool Skin Genius. The technology virtually diagnoses and assesses your skin across five key dimensions (lines & wrinkles, radiance, firmness, pore quality and tone) and provides you with a personalised diagnosis and regime.
