Lactic acid, a member of the family alpha hydroxyl acid (AHA) family, is commonly known for its production during humanly strenuous exercises. However, it can also be derived synthetically or organically from natural foods, such as milk. Lactic acid is known for its beneficial exfoliating properties on the corneum (outermost layer of the skin). Due to its high water-retention characteristics, Lactic acid can inhibit hand dryness and a skin flaking when applied topically.1
In addition, Lactic acid can help improve skin tone evenness by enhancing skin cell turnover.2
Furthermore, studies have shown that Lactic acid is comparable to hexachlorophene as a skin-cleaning agent.3
