5 Easy, Cute Rainy Day Hairstyles

August 21, 2017

We’ve all been there: Your alarm goes off, you wake up with the perfect outfit neatly laid out, and you’re ready to slay the day…only to look out your window and witness a total downpour. Ugh, there goes your whole look, right? Wrong. While rain can certainly put a damper on your hair, it doesn’t have to mean the end of serious style. That’s right—with a little patience, a few hairstyling products, and some super simple styling techniques, you can take the day by storm—even when it’s literally storming out. To show you how to make the most out of your rainy day hair, we rounded up our five cute and easy hairstyle tutorials. Hey, you might even find you want to wear them when it’s sunny out!

Rainy Day Hairstyle #1: Headband Tuck

Wearing your hair up on a rainy day might seem like the best option—but who said messy buns and deflated ponytails are the only way to go? This wrapped headband tuck is super-cute and stylish.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray

Headband

Rat tail comb

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Put on a headband. Start by placing an elastic headband over top of your hair, just above your ears.

Step 2: Pull your hair into a ponytail. Next, gather the ends in your hands like a ponytail.

Step 3: Tuck your hair. Tuck the ends up into the back of the headband, concealing the visible elastic.

Step 4: Coil your hair. Once your hair is tucked, continue to roll your hair into the headband. You want your hair to be tightly coiled around the sides of your head and looser in the back for a more voluminous look. To fluff up the back of your coil, as well as the hair around the crown of your head, stick the tail end of your rat tail comb into your hair and gently tug until it looks just fluffy enough.

Step 5: Finish with hairspray. To help your hairstyle stay in place when it’s raining cats and dogs, give it an allover spritz of the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray.

Rainy Day Hairstyle #2: Wrapped Braid

Leaving your hair down when it’s raining out can seem like risky business if you’re prone to frizz. That’s where braids come into play. Embrace your hair’s texture by rocking this wrapped braid.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray

Mini elastic

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Create a side part. Rainy day ‘dos don’t call for a ton of precision, so feel free to use your hands to create a rough side part.

Step 2: Pull all your hair over to one shoulder. More specifically, pull it to the shoulder corresponding with the larger side of your part.

Step 3: Dutch braid along your hairline. Starting on the thicker side of your side part, as you weave your braid back towards the crown of your head, continually add more pieces of hair to your braid. Once you reach the back side of your head, stop adding in more hair and weave the hair that you have all the way to the ends.

Step 4: Twist your braid around your loose hair. Easy enough!

Step 5: Secure with a clear elastic at the ends. Once you finish wrapping your braid loosely around your free-hanging hair, tie the ends of your entire side pony together with a clear elastic and finish with a spritz of the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray. Voila!

Rainy Day Hairstyle #3: Dutch Pigtails

Pigtails are one of our favorite hairstyles from childhood, but so often they’re left out of the discussion when you’re considering how to do your hair as an adult. Dutch pigtails, when fluffed up just right, look anything but juvenile.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Clay Dry Shampoo

Rat tail comb

Clear elastics

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Start with day-old hair. Dutch pigtails look especially gorgeous when created with day-old hair. So, spray your strands with the L’Oréal Paris Hair Expert Extraordinary Clay Dry Shampoo before styling.

Step 2: Part your hair. Using a rat tail comb, split your hair down the middle with a center part.

Step 3: Weave your braids. Unlike traditional three-strand braids, Dutch braids are created by splitting your hair into three strands and braiding them underhand rather than overhand. What’s more, when creating your double Dutch ‘do, you want to try to keep your braids centered down the back of your head for a more modern, mature approach to your favorite youthful style.

Step 4: Pause at the nape of your neck. To further update your age appropriate pigtails, pause at the nape of your neck to tie off your pigtails with clear elastics and wrap a few loose strands around the elastics to conceal them before braiding the rest of your pigtails to the ends.

Step 5: Pancake your braids. Once you’ve reached the ends of your pigtails and tied them off with clear elastics, it’s time to perk up your braids. You want to focus the majority of the fluffing at your hairline, towards your center part and down the lengths of your pigtails. The trick is to keep the sides of your head tight so that it doesn’t make your crown look wider than it is.

Rainy Day Hairstyle #4: Retro Faux Bob Updo

What if you could wear your hair down while keeping it up? Seems like a bit of a paradox, but with this retro faux bob updo it’s totally possible and seriously chic.

What you’ll need:

L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray

Rat tail comb

Hair tie

Bobby pins

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Start with beach waves. Since rainy days are pretty much synonymous with frizz, we feel like there’s zero reason to put your hair through the ringer with heat styling. When you hop out of the shower, just spray your hair with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray and allow your hair to dry into beautiful beachy waves.

Step 2: Create a side part. Part your hair deeply to one side while brushing the crown straight back.

Step 3: Back comb the crown of your head. Which really means holding the hair at the crown of your head straight up in the air while using your other hand to comb the underside of your hair down towards your roots. The result? A bit of a rat’s nest that’s the staple of this iconic retro look.

Step 4: Create your faux lob. Once your hair is perfectly volumized, smooth it back into a low ponytail, being careful not to squish down your volume. Place a hair tie around your hair loosely before twisting the ends up underneath to pin into place to create your faux bob look. After your hair is pinned in place, use the tail of your rat tail comb to gently pull down your tucked hair just enough to conceal your hair tie.

Step 5: Finish with hairspray. You’re done!

Rainy Day Hairstyle #5: Fishtail Accented Messy Bun

We feel it’d be a disservice to not leave you with a messy bun tutorial for your rainy day needs. While we recommend trying hairstyles outside of your normal messy bun and pony when the skies begin to open up, this fishtail accented messy bun is definitely an exception. With just enough added flair to rev up your style game in a flash, this hairstyle deserves a spot in your line-up rain or shine.

What you’ll need:

Mini elastic

Hair tie

Bobby pins

Get the look by following these simple steps:

Step 1: Pull your hair into a ponytail. Messy buns are meant to be, well, messy. Skip the brush so that you can maintain the natural air-dried texture of your ‘do and use your hands to tie your hair into a high ponytail. Don’t worry about smoothing out lumps and bumps because messy buns look especially natural and romantic when the small flaws are embraced.

Step 2: Create a fishtail braid. Using about a quarter of your ponytail, weave a fishtail braid. Make sure to fluff up your braid once you tie it off with a mini elastic so that it looks extra voluminous.

Step 4: Create your bun. Pile your unbraided hair around itself into a messy bun. Then, wrap the fishtail braid around the base of your bun to hide the hair tie and add a gorgeous accent to your messy look. Pin your braid into place behind your bun, making sure to tuck it up and in so that it goes unnoticed.

Step 5: Pull out face framing strands. Purposefully messy hairstyles look especially pretty when framed with little whimsical flyaways. Before the rain has a chance to affect your style, get a head start by pulling a few strands out in front of your ears and along your hairline.

See, you don’t have to let the weather rain on your hair parade. Just get creative and embrace the day (and your hair’s natural texture!).
