7 Things to Know About Eyelash Extensions

February 25, 2020

When you think about being glamorous, one of the first images that probably pops into your mind is a set of full, voluminous lashes. There’s just something about a dramatic fringe that immediately captures the eye and transforms any makeup look—whether that’s a no makeup, makeup look or bold black eye makeup. And while we're eternally grateful for the power of a few layers of a volumizing mascara, there’s nothing like being able to say, “I woke up like this.”

Want to wake up with long, envy-worthy lashes? If you do, you’re likely to find yourself asking, “Are eyelash extensions worth it?” In which case, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to find out seven things you need to know about lash extensions, including how much they cost and how to clean them.

WHAT ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), eyelash extensions are faux lashes that come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials (synthetic, silk, and mink). Lash extensions are applied by a technician at a beauty salon using tweezers and a semi-permanent glue to give the appearance of longer, thicker lashes that typically last for between three and four weeks. Basically, they’re very similar to individual false lashes, except they last longer.

7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT EYELASH EXTENSIONS

Of course, eyelash extensions basically sound like a dream come true. Flawless lashes for a month without the need to apply any makeup? Yes, please! However, there are a few things you should know about eyelash extensions before committing to this semi-permanent treatment. Here’s the breakdown:

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #1: DO YOUR RESEARCH

Before starting any new service, you want to do your research and ensure that the service you’re getting is being done in a clean, hygienic environment by someone with the required level of experience and expertise. The AAO states that before getting eyelash extensions, it’s important to research the salon’s reputation, how long they’ve been in business, if they practice good hygiene, and their customer before-and-after photos. It’s also a must to look into the training, certification, and experience the aesthetician who will be applying your eyelash extensions has. Do your homework!

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #2: BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT ALLERGIES

The AAO also notes that the ingredients in the semi-permanent glue used to adhere eyelash extensions can cause allergic reactions. According to the National Center for Biotechnological Information (NCBI), artificial eyelashes typically use methacrylate-based adhesives that can result in allergic contact dermatitis. It’s recommended to ask for the glue’s ingredient list prior to getting eyelash extensions in order to make an informed decision about whether you may be allergic to the formula used. Additionally, the AAO recommends confirming that the expiration date of the glue has not passed, and to request the glue be tested on the inside of your wrist prior to application to see whether or not you may experience an allergic reaction. Remember, better safe than sorry!

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #3: SAVE UP

How much are eyelash extensions? The NCBI states that eyelash extensions can cost as much as $500, meaning that this service definitely costs a pretty penny. Keeping in mind that eyelash extensions typically last for around a month, the cost of this beauty trend can add up pretty quickly. If you’re set on getting eyelash extensions, save, save, save!

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #4: DEDICATE THE DAY

As you’ve probably already guessed, getting eyelash extensions isn’t a quick in and out service. According to the AAO, the process can take as long as two hours. If you’re committed to the idea of lash extensions and book an appointment, plan your day around getting your lashes done. This is something you won’t want to rush.

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #5: EDIT YOUR ROUTINE

It’s true that getting eyelash extensions should make your beauty routine easier; after all, you won’t have to bother applying mascara or curling your lashes. The flipside of this is that you’ll also need to be prepared to make a few other changes to your routine—hopefully, you aren’t totally attached to your current makeup remover. Oil-based cleansers and makeup removers can break down the eyelash extension adhesive to the detriment of your lash look. To keep your fringe, stick with oil-free products. Wondering how to clean eyelash extensions? The same rule applies!

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #6: ADJUST YOUR HABITS

Are you prone to rubbing your eyes when you get tired? Well, you’ll want to stop that ASAP. If you rub your eyes, you risk rubbing your extensions off—and after what you paid, we know you don’t want that.

EYELASH EXTENSION TIP #7: PLAY UP YOUR BROWS

If you’re planning to leave the salon with dramatic eyelashes, you may want to pick up a brow gel while you’re out. Sparse brows and lush lashes just don’t go together! So, grab the L’Oréal Paris Unbelievabrow Longwear Waterproof Brow Gel and fill in your brows until they match the intensity of your extensions.
