Sophia Kianni is an Iranian-American social entrepreneur and activist studying at Stanford University. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Climate Cardinals, the world's largest youth-led climate nonprofit with 9,000 volunteers spanning over 40 countries.
Sophia's journey to activism began in middle school when she realized the alarming lack of climate change awareness among her relatives in Iran. This inspired her to work with her mom to translate climate resources into Farsi, and later coordinate with notable activists like Greta Thunberg to organize climate strikes in high school.
She founded Climate Cardinals in her senior year of high school, and most recently the organization partnered with Google to pilot new AI/ML tools to automate its climate translations. With their help, they have now translated 500,000+ words of resources into 40+ languages for partners including the Yale Center for Climate Communications and United Nations Development Programme.
Sophia’s work has garnered international recognition, with features in prominent media outlets and accolades including being named VICE Media's youngest Human of the Year, a National Geographic Young Explorer, and a Forbes 30 under 30 honoree. Notably, Sophia is the youngest United Nations advisor in US history.
